What is woodworm?
Different species of xylophagous beetles deposit their eggs in cracks and fissures in the wood. When they hatch, tiny larvae emerge that penetrate into the wood, from which they will feed until they reach adulthood. These larval stages are what we commonly know as woodworm.

DEFINITION AND TYPES
In Spain, we differentiate 3 types of xylophagous beetles that can affect wood. The most common is the one belonging to the “Family of the Anobids” among which there are species such as the “Woodworm of the furniture” or the “Woodworm of the clock”. Another class is the one that makes up the “Family of the Cerambicids” called commonly “Big Woodworm or Capricorns”, and finally we find the “Family of the Lyctids” which we can also be known by the name of “Woodworm” or “Woodworm Moth”.uet”.
EATING HABITS AND BEHAVIOUR
The damage caused by woodworm occurs in its larval stage. At this point, the larvae generate galleries through which they move, feeding on the compounds present in the wood and weakening its structure.
Woodworms have different eating habits, depending on the family to which they belong. Generally, Anobids prefer dry wood, and although they can attack hard as well as soft wood, they prefer the latter, such as pine and fir.
Cerambícidos, have a greater predilection for fresh wood (that has been cut recently) without distinguishing whether they are soft or hard, being able to feed on both the sapwood and the heartwood (inner and more resistant part of the wood).
The Lyctids feed on hardwood that has a high starch content, such as oak and walnut, and a humidity between 10% and 30%.
REPRODUCTION
The life cycle of woodworm begins with the placement of the eggs by the beetle in the cracks of the wood. Once they have hatched, the larvae go inside the wood to feed, generating galleries that weaken the pieces inside.
When the larvae mature, they metamorphose, emerging in the form of beetles. They then make holes in the surface of the wood, which usually happens in the hottest months, from April to September.
This cycle repeats itself when the beetles, which are already outside the wood, again deposit their eggs in the cracks in the wood. These adults have the ability to fly, so they can spread the pest to new elements or pieces.
How woodworm affects wood
